The UK's new tariff regime, the UK Global Tariff (UK GT), will replace the EU’s Common External Tariff on 1 January 2021 (the end of the Transition Period), and set the duty on imports from other countries into the UK.
This new system is simpler and easier to use than the existing one, and will be in pounds instead of euros. The UK GT will also protect developing countries’ tariff free access to the UK, and promote sustainability by cutting tariffs on energy-efficient products.
In taking this step away from the Common External Tariff, we are reducing red tape and administrative trade costs for businesses, supporting UK industries, and increasing consumer choice across the country. The UK GT will be instrumental in our economic recovery from the coronavirus crisis, removing production barriers for British firms and championing free trade.
